Apply to be registered

To register for an election, the appropriate registration form should be completed and lodged with the NSWEC (See Forms).

Registration for a State general election starts on polling day for the previous State election. For a State by-election, registration starts on the day the writ is issued.

Registration for a Local Government general election starts on polling day for the previous local government election. For a local government by-election, registration starts on the first day the election is advertised.

The application must be made by the candidate, group or third-party campaigner, or the official agent of the candidate, group or third-party campaigner.

If a candidate or group is required to appoint an agent (see Agents) the Application for Registration form must be accompanied by the Notice of Appointment of Official Agent form (See Forms) .

An application for a third-party campaigner must be made no later than the 8th day prior to election day. The application form must be accompanied by the Notice of Appointment of Official Agent form (See Forms). If an agent is not appointed, the NSWEC may reject the application for registration.

The NSWEC may refuse to register a candidate, group or third-party campaigner if there is reason to believe the information provided in the application is incorrect or incomplete.

Registered candidates, groups and third-party campaigners are included on a Register of Candidates or Register of Third-Party Campaigners kept by the NSWEC for each election (See Registers).
